Combi boilers explained

A combination or combi boiler combines central heating and mains-fed hot-water production in one appliance. When a hot tap or shower is opened, the boiler heats the incoming water as it passes through the unit. There is no stored supply waiting in a cylinder.

Advantages of a combi boiler

  • No separate hot-water cylinder or loft cistern is normally required.
  • Hot water is produced on demand, so there is no cylinder to reheat after normal use.
  • The compact arrangement can free an airing cupboard or loft space.

Disadvantages of a combi boiler

System boilers explained

Regular, conventional and heat-only boilers explained

A regular boiler is also commonly described as a heat-only, traditional or conventional boiler. In a traditional open-vented setup, the boiler heats the radiators and a separate hot-water cylinder. Small cisterns in the loft feed the hot-water and heating circuits.

The different types of boiler systems should be compared by the complete heating and hot-water arrangement, not by boiler output alone. A powerful appliance cannot compensate for restricted mains flow, an unsuitable cylinder, undersized pipework or poor system design.

Is a condensing boiler another type of boiler?

No. “Combi”, “system” and “regular” describe how a boiler supplies heating and hot water. “Condensing” describes how the appliance recovers additional heat from its flue gases to improve efficiency.

Which boiler type is best for different homes?

Flat or small house with one bathroom

1. Hot-water demand

Count the bathrooms, but also think about how they are used. A two-bathroom home where only one shower runs at a time has a different demand from a household that regularly uses two showers and a kitchen tap together.

2. Incoming mains flow and pressure

Combi boilers and mains-fed unvented cylinders depend on the water entering the property. Static pressure alone is not enough; an engineer should consider the available flow while water is being drawn.

3. Space for a cylinder or loft tanks

A combi uses the least internal space, but space saving should not override hot-water performance. A system boiler needs a cylinder, while a traditional regular setup usually needs both a cylinder and loft cisterns.

4. Existing heating system condition

Old radiators, valves and pipework may need cleaning, repairs or replacement before being connected to a new pressurised system. A survey should also check the current cylinder, pumps, controls and water quality.

5. Heating output and hot-water output

Boiler sizing should not be based only on the number of radiators. Space-heating output should follow the property’s calculated heat loss. With a combi boiler, domestic hot-water output and flow rate are a separate consideration and can drive the model choice.

Which boiler type is most efficient?

There is no universal answer based on system type alone. Modern combi, system and regular boilers can all use condensing technology. Real performance depends on the appliance, controls, flow temperature, system design, property heat loss, hot-water use and how well the boiler is commissioned.

A combi avoids standing heat loss from a hot-water cylinder, but it may be a poor choice if it cannot meet the household’s hot-water needs. A cylinder-based system has some stored-water heat loss, yet it can be the more practical arrangement for a busy home. Correct suitability matters more than choosing a type from an efficiency label alone.

Are heat pumps and electric boilers boiler types?

Fuel type and system layout are separate subjects. Gas, LPG and oil boilers may be available in combi, system or heat-only formats, depending on the manufacturer. Electric boilers use electricity rather than combustion and need a separate assessment of electrical supply, hot-water arrangement and likely running costs.
